It's good to be bad, says Priyanka

It`s good to be bad, says PriyankaShe is one of the most sought after leading ladies in the Hindi movie industry, but actress Priyanka Chopra prefers characters with grey shades over positive roles. And why not? Her role of a femme fatale in "7 Khoon Maaf" has fetched her a prestigious award.

"I like doing negative roles. I think they are lots of fun. It's so good being bad, " said the 29-year-old who bagged the Screen award for the best actress in a negative role for "7 Khoon Maaf".

Priyanka had earlier donned negative shades for the 2004 successful film "Aitraaz" -- for her performance in that film also she had won the Filmfare award for the best performance in a negative role.

The former beauty queen is careful while choosing a role as she feels that the character should leave an impact, however, small it is.

"I think the most important thing in a character to see that it has a presence. A character should not feel wasted or redundant. Even if it is a small role, the scenes that you have should make an impact, that is important, " said Priyanka who will be seen playing Hrithik's love interest Kaali in "Agneepath" releasing on Republic Day.

Besides "Agneepath", Priyanka is also busy shooting for "Teri Meri Kahaani", "Barfee" and "Krrish 3."

Banned ambassador?

Banned ambassador?Despite being felicitated by the CM, actor Jackie Shroff was missing from most events of the Road Safety Fortnight, allegedly due to mismanagement

Whether the recently concluded Road Safety Fortnight organised by regional transport offices (RTOs) and Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) has made the city's streets any safer will be gauged in the days to come, but the one aspect that has raised eyebrows is the missing brand ambassador.

MiD DAY had reported on January 3 how actor Jackie Shroff was anointed after being invited to the unveiling of the drive by WIAA, with RTO officials scratching their heads to fathom the reason behind his presence.

Road Safety Fortnight concluded on January 16 with the RTOs of Andheri, Wadala and Tardeo bringing down the curtains on the event for this year.

Now, RTO officers say that Jackie was missing from the nearly 100 different programmes - including eye checkups for drivers, fitness tests of vehicles, painting contests for kids etc - that were organised as part of the drive.

They claim that the actor wasn't in contact with them and they didn't know how or what for to get in touch with him. "There was no official note on what functions Jackie Shroff will actually attend. So we didn't know how to call him, " said an official from Tardeo RTO.

"Many of these functions included drivers of public transport vehicles like autos, taxis and buses and it would have become difficult to control the crowd if Jackie had come, " said another officer from Andheri RTO.

WIAA had recommended the actor's name as brand ambassador. "Jackie Shroff did attend one of our functions and distributed helmets to people. In fact he is the brand ambassador until a new one is chosen, " said Nitin Dossa of the association.

When MiD DAY contacted Jackie Shroff, he said that he had gone to Bhandup to attend one of the functions on road safety. "I distributed helmets and told people about the need to drive carefully. They should realise that parents and children are waiting for them back home, " he said.

"For my new show called the 'Oprah's Next Chapter', I am doing a story all about India, and I wanted to see all aspects of India to see a broad view of what it is like to be an Indian.

It is very revealing and I would say amazing to me... so I met the people from Bollywood and other aspects, " Winfrey told reporters when she visited a slum area near Regal theatre in Colaba Tuesday.

"What I love the most about this country is their tolerance... How the families learn to love and live together! When I was in America and talking to famous people, I would ask how you live with your parents... now I see how you do it, " she added.

The 57-year-old landed in Mumbai Monday. Among the first things she did was meet Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan's two -month old daughter, nicknamed Beti B.

After spending more than an hour at the Bachchan resident, Winfrey attended a party organised by socialite Parmeshwar Godrej Monday night.

She wore an orange and golden sari for the party, and teamed it with golden bangles. Winfrey confirmed the sari was by designer Tarun Tahiliani, and that she would soon wear designs by the popular designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee too.

Winfrey is primarily here to shoot for her new show "Next Chapter", which will see her travelling around the world and interviewing celebrities. In India, she will interview spiritual guru Deepak Chopra.

" (In India) I'll be interviewing Deepak Chopra. I've never seen India before. I actually came to meet Chopra, who's a friend, " said Winfrey.

She is planning to devote five hours of her show to stories on India, as she said: "I'm not just doing one story, I'm doing five hours on India."

Since "it's just been a day", Winfrey has little to say of India, and hopes to travel around to get the most of the country.

Jaipur and Agra are definitely on her itinerary, and she is reportedly scheduled to shoot at the Taj Mahal.

Sanjay Dutt draws inspiration from Joker for Kaancha laughter

Sanjay Dutt draws inspiration from Joker for Kaancha laughterSanjay Dutt has now admitted that the laughter of his Kaancha Cheena character in Agneepath has been inspired by Jack Nicholson's cackling as the Joker in Batman.

As Jack is his favourite actor, the star had it on his mind while working on his character's trademark guffaws.

Earlier, the actor's bald look was said to have been inspired by Marlon Brando's style in Apocalypse Now!

PS: When Dutt shaved his head, his twins Shahraan and Iqra stayed away from him as they couldn't recognise him! They took a while to recognise their bald dad and that too only upon hearing his voice.

To Sahib, with love: Ali Zafar to raise funeds for ailing Mehdi Hassan

Ali ZafarThe ailing ghazal maestro doesn't have enough money to pay his medical bills. Ali Zafar and Salman Ahmad are raising funds to help him

While legendary ghazal singer Mehdi Hassan is battling for life at the Agha Khan University Hospital in Karachi, fellow Pakistani musicians are spreading the word about his financial condition.

The singer who was admitted to the hospital last week due to a chronic lung infection now requires over Rs 42 lakh for treatment, an amount his family is struggling to put together.

And that is why musicians like Salman Ahmed (of Junoon fame) and singer-turned-actor Zafar are trying to help raise funds for the ailing artist.

Says Salman who has been on the forefront of the cause - talking about it on radio stations and social networking sites, "Mehdi Hassan sahib is a Pakistani treasure loved by fans all over the world.

Our organisation SSGWI (Salman and Samina Gobal Welness Initiative) will help get him resources and medical attention. I've been talking about the need for support to arts and culture in Pakistan and will do the same for Hassan sahib as well."

When the 85-year-old ghazal maestro fell seriously ill in 2009, his family was unable to foot his medical bills. Son Arif Mehdi Hassan clearly stated that the family income was not sufficient to support the medical facilities.

The situation at this point is more or less the same, apart from the fact that the money required now is almost four times more.

Adds a source from Pakistan, "People say they will help, but there is no substantial support. Mehdi sahib has been suffering for years now and it is everyone's responsibility to help him." A group of Pakistani musicians are also planning to hold a charity concert.

Says Ali Zafar, "In my capacity I am spreading the word. We have even spoken to some officials of the Pakistan government. I am his second-generation shagird (student) and I have been listening to his music since childhood."

Last we heard was that the Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri has promised to help the legendary singer who has served the music industry for over 50 years.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara team boycotts awards eventApparently in protest to jury member Sanjay Gupta's comment about the film being a copy

The cold war between Sanjay Gupta and Zoya Akhtar's team after the former opposing the latter's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) in a jury meeting for Best Picture, has just intensified.

The entire ZNMD team barring Katrina Kaif boycotted the Colors Screen Award function on Saturday night after it was made known that Zoya's film would have to share the Best Picture trophy with Milan Luthria's The Dirty Picture.

Says a source close to the Akhtars, "They stayed away after they heard of this ridiculous scheme to keep two filmmakers and their teams happy by putting them both up for Best Picture."

What has specially hurt the Akhtars is that the move to oppose their film for Best Picture came from Sanjay Gupta.

Says the source, "The guy has made his career out of filching foreign DVDs. And he accuses Zoya of copying some film that no one has heard of!"

Ends the source, "This incident has definitely soured relations between Farhan Akhtar and Sanjay Gupta."

Absolutely No acting for Trishala: Sanjay Dutt

Absolutely No acting for Trishala: Sanjay DuttWhen it comes to his daughter Trishala, Sanjay Dutt is a very protective father. He does not want her in showbiz.

The 22-year-old was interested in acting but Sanjay didn't back her.

"Absolutely true and underline it 500 times, " Sanjay told, about his opposition.

"If somebody says give me the reason, I am going to show my finger because she is my daughter."

Trishala is from Sanjay's first wife Richa Sharma, who was an actress and died of cancer.

The 51-year-old Sanjay, now married to Manyata from whom he has twins, believes women have to struggle a lot in the film industry and he doesn't want his daughter to face all this.

"If you want the reason, my father (Sunil Dutt) never wanted any female from my family to join the film industry.

Not because film industry is a bad place for woman, not because film industry is taboo in the country, only because it's a huge struggle for women.

Being the oldest in the family I can't give up that legacy, " said Sanjay, whose mother Nargis was a top notch actress of the 1950s and 1960s.

This restriction is not only imposed on his daughter, but his nieces are kept away from the arclight.

"My sisters would have also come... even their daughters, who are so pretty, could also have come, " he said.

Unfortunately, he didn't spend some quality time in her childhood days with Trishala, who was raised by her maternal grand parents in the US.

"I have never seen the aspect of fatherhood with Trishala. That's a sad thing and my bad luck.

I feel sad for her. Anyways that was my bad luck. I wish I could spend all those moments with her also. Nonetheless, we will make up."

'Kiss' and sex talk lands Ali Zafar's film in trouble

`Kiss` and sex talk lands Ali Zafar`s film in trouble The sex talk and kiss in 'London, New York, Paris' got its trailer an 'A' certificate

After the Censor Board clamped down on Ali Zafar and Aditi Rao Hydari's next, the filmmakers are now in a panic mode. The sex scene between the two has already created a problem for the film's producer after the board gave an 'A' certificate to the film trailer, thereby limiting its reach.

The trailer is said to have sexual references. 'Adult' trailers can only be screened with feature films for mature audiences.

It is also being said that Pakistani pop star Ali Zafar's smooch with Aditi might be up for moral scrutiny in the actor's home country. Now the producers have decided to modify the sequence for both the trailer and feature film format.

Vijay Singh, the CEO of the production company says, "We got an 'Adults' certificate for the trailer. But we're aiming for a 'U/A'. Unlike Delhi Belly that targeted an adult audience, our film is for a much younger audience. We will modify the sex reference in the relevant scene."

We also hear that Ali was rather reluctant to kiss his co-star in the film. However he had to give in finally.

Says a source, "Unlike some of his Pakistani colleagues from the entertainment world who come to India and create controversies, Ali is very careful about his image.

When the kisses in the script were narrated to him he had flatly refused, arguing that they could be fudged. He did not want to risk offending his country's strong political and cultural lobby after kissing his co-star. On top of being a Pakistani, Ali is also a married man with a child."

However, it seems Aditi has no qualms with smooching scenes despite belonging to a conservative royal family in Hyderabad. Our source points out, "Aditi has done innumerable kisses in Sudhir Mishra's Yeh Saali Zindagi. She also kissed Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar.

She convinced Ali it was okay to let the lip-lock happen." We hear that instead of several kisses that were penned in the script, the Pakistani singer finally agreed to shoot for just one. The producers have refrained from commenting on this matter. Ali's kissing debut is being kept as quiet as possible.

Today`s songs lack good lyrics: Kavita Krishnamurthy

Today`s songs lack good lyrics: Kavita KrishnamurthyShe has been in the music industry for over two decades and has some memorable and meaningful songs to her credit, but veteran singer Kavita Krishnamurthy rues the lack of good lyrics in today's otherwise trendy works.

"As the generation advances its taste does change and it is not always necessary that they will like what we liked. The old Hindi film songs are evergreen and will be loved even after a decade. What I think about 'the happening and trendy songs of this era' is that less attention is given to the lyrics, which are very important part of any composition," Kavita said in an interview.

"However, there are some songs, which are really good and are my personal favourites like 'Piyu Bole' from 'Parineeta' or 'Tu na jane aas pas hai khuda' from 'Anjana Anjani', 'Tere mast mast do nain' from 'Dabangg'," she added.

Kavita, 53, has been singing since the age of nine and has given melodious hits like "Aaj main upar", "Mera piya ghar aaya", "Pyaar hua chupke se", "Dola re dola" among others and the singer admits she is not getting a chance to sing such songs anymore.

"I certainly do miss singing such songs. The thing is that I am not getting the songs that I used to, songs which are challenging and yet fun to sing," said Kavita, who has also sung many devotional songs.

"I don't ever bother if the music director is a big name or a debutant. If the work is fun and challenging, I would love to work with them. I wish to sing a peaceful Sufiana song," she added.

Kavita was conferred the prestigious Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honours in 2005. The singer, who's popular song "Hawa hawaii" was recently re-mixed in Anurag Kashyap's "Shaitan", says she personally doesn't like re-mixes.

"Well, I personally don't like the re-mixes, I find original better. But if I look at it from other angle, people picked up my song from other songs to remix, which means it still has the ability to amaze the audience. So it also feels good," she said.

Kavita, who is married to violinist L. Subramaniam, has sung for actresses like Shabana Azmi, Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Manisha Koirala and Aishwarya Rai, and now wants to sing for Vidya Balan, Nandita Das and Konkona Sen Sharma.

"I would really like to sing a soulful song for Vidya Balan, Nandita Das and Konkona Sen Sharma," she said.

Your take on the increasing competition in music industry?

"Competition exists in every era. During my time there were other veteran singers like Alka Yagnik and Anuradhaji (Paudwal) but there was no stiff competition, which is often defined by jealousy," she said.

"Music is for spiritual elevation, but if you add jealousy to it, you only tend to shrink your talent. As far as the question about me earning my bread and butter goes, well, I always felt that god's blessings are were with me, so struggle as such was unfelt...," she added.

Kavita is currently working on an album "which will be composed by my husband and it will release in mid 2012".

The album will also feature a song which she has sung with singer Lucky Ali.

Sachiin Azaan Joshi has some secrets up his sleeve!

Sachiin Azaan Joshi has some secrets up his sleeve! A Mumbai eveninger recently gossiped that it spotted the Azaan star Sachiin Joshi at a Dubai hotel “strolling in bright pink chaddis” while he was there to participate in Sohail Khan’s celebrity cricket match.

But now Sachiin’s new publicist Dale Bhagwagar insists, the Bollywood young gun was wearing “red chaddis and not pink”! Lol!

He pooh pooh’s the writer of the article saying, “He might have been colour-blind or dreaming middle of the day! Because I’m told the chaddis were red and Sachiin was wearing them above his tights.”

“Sachiin even had Superman’s monogram on his blue suit which matched with the initials of his name,” the publicist adds with a straight face, before breaking into laughter!

“With this new revelation of colour and all, I hope the journalist is pulled up for incorrect reporting,” he smirks and winks.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Sachiin is on the verge of some real ‘super’ career moves.

While his debut film Azaan gathered accolades and pushed the boundaries for technical excellence in Indian cinema, the actor’s future projects are only going to be bigger and better.

Our source reveals that Sachiin has at least two dynamic film announcements coming up this month itself.

Plus, the actor is also expected to bag a few awards for his debut film Azaan.

Whether he will walk into the award nights in an Armani suit or ‘land’ in a blue suit with red chaddis above it is yet to be seen. Tch tch!

I can't let actors suddenly break into song: Anurag Kashyap

I can`t let actors suddenly break into song: Anurag KashyapAnurag Kashyap's films lack typical Bollywood song sequences and the writer-director says he loves music but does not understand their sudden appearance between scenes.

"I love music and I will never let go of it. I love songs, but the thing is that I can't let actors suddenly breaking into a song. So, I have figured out my own way to use music in the films we are working on," the 39-year-old said at a press conference.

Kashyap, known for his off-beat cinema like "Black Friday", "Gulaal", "Dev D" and "Udaan", asserted that he never intended to make cult films but couldn't help that he did.

"I have unintentionally made cult films. I intended to make box-office hits. Cult films are made unintentionally, they become cult films because of the people. The director does not make a cult film," said the filmmaker who is working on "Gangs of Wasseypur".

He stayed away from stars initially, but now he has teamed up with Rani Mukerji for his co-production "Aiyaa" and he is also co-producing Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh starrer "Lootera".

While his thriller "Ugly" sees him working with Rahul Bhatt, Ronit Roy and Tejaswini Kolahpuri.

I'm Not remaking 'Appadi Podu' song: Sonu Sood

I`m Not remaking `Appadi Podu` song: Sonu SoodActor Sonu Sood has denied reports that he is doing the Hindi remake of Tamil chartbuster "Appadi Podu", saying the rights are with Bollywood star Akshay Kumar.

"Hi, all the stories of me doing the 'Appadi Podu' song for 'Lucky Unlucky' are not true. The rights are with Akshay Kumar for his home production," the 38-year-old posted on Twitter.

"Will really look forward to it, I am sure he will rock," he added.

According to reports, Sonu had bought rights of the song for his home production "Lucky Unlucky" and that will dance on the song with Mallika Sherawat, his leading lady in the film.

It is now said that Akshay will use the song for his upcoming film "Naam Hai Boss".

Awards important, but Ranbir prefers filmmaking

Awards important, but Ranbir prefers filmmakingRanbir Kapoor, who recently bagged a Screen award for the best actor for a powerful performance in "Rockstar", says winning honours is important, but the process of making a film is more important.

"Awards are important because it's an acknowledgement. We work very hard for a film. But I think, for me, the process of making the whole film is more important," said the 29-year-old who is happy to have worked with names like late Shammi Kapoor, A.R. Rahman and Imtiaz Ali in "Rockstar".

Both critics and moviegoers loved his character of Janardhan who transforms into Jordan in the hit film, but Ranbir doesn't hope to win all the awards this season.

"I don't think so, but if I get all of them I will be happy," said Ranbir who is currently filming for Anurag Basu's "Barfee".

The Kapoor boy is also, reportedly, doing a film based on the life of legendary actor-singer Kishore Kumar.

'I was shocked to see Katrina dancing the way she did'

`I was shocked to see Katrina dancing the way she did`The larger than life villain is making a comeback in Bollywood with "Agneepath". Hindi movie lovers who grew up seeing Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh and Amrish Puri as Mogambo may now have memories of a bygone era revived by Sanjay Dutt as Kancha Cheena, the scariest bad man in town.

Mean and menacing characters had almost disappeared from the Hindi film industry, but Sanjay is ready to send shivers down the spine of the audiences as the ruthless, cold-blooded Kancha in "Agneepath", which is releasing on Republic Day. So much so that it scared the actor himself.

"I am not like Kancha in my real life. A few days back I was dubbing for the climax scene. After 15 minutes, I had to stop it and I said I want to go out. Karan Johar came and asked what happened. I said if I genuinely say something you will laugh.

Actually, I can't see myself like this. I got so scared of myself. I couldn't believe that's me," the 51-year-old, who had played a baddie in "Khalnayak", told.

The actor claims Hindi film viewers have not seen someone as bad as Kancha so far.

Sanjay said: "There has never been a villian like Kancha in Bollywood. If you see superhero films Spiderman, Batman, the villians' roles are so powerful that throughout the film the villain gives a tough time to the hero. It's very nice that Karan had given it a thought that the villain should be larger than life and that nobody can stand in front of him."

"Kancha Cheena is an unpredictable character. He has interpreted the Shri Bhagavad Geeta in his own way. It's a very complex character. It is difficult to understand Kancha," he added.

The original, which was directed by Mukul Anand, was produced by Yash Johar and the new version has been made by his son Karan Johar and debutant Karan Malhotra has helmed the movie.

In the original "Agneepath", which came in the theatres in late 1990 amid loads of critical acclaim, Danny Denzongpa had played Kancha Cheena.

The promos of "Agneepath" have received a positive response and the item number "Chikni Chameli" from the movie has caught on like wildfire.

Sanjay was so impressed by Katrina Kaif's performance in the song that he said, "I was shocked to see Katrina dancing the way she did. It was brilliant. She is used to Western dance and she was seen doing all Marathavad."

Sanjay assures that though it's a remake, the film will be different.

"The premise is the same. Vijay Deenanath Chahuhan is there in the film. His father has been killed by Kancha. It's revenge and that too in a very real and a very rustic way," Sanjay said.

Unlike other stars, Sanjay doesn't hesitate to act his age and believes in accepting it and moving on.

"A person has to accept his age and move on. I am saying when you reach a certain age of maturity, you should accept that. If you are 48, you can play 40 years old, but you can't play 20 years old."

However, he believes age doesn't restrict you from performing.

"Amitji (Bachchan) gets fantastic roles. What to do...I am a human being, I can't be 25 for the rest of my life. If I try to be 25, people are going to laugh at me. Now I have to get the characters which have a meaning," he said.
